According to incomplete statistics, there are about 50 continuous casting protective slag enterprises in China. Among these 50 enterprises, there are large-scale production enterprises with an annual output of more than 100,000 tons and more than 10 production lines, as well as small-scale enterprises with an annual output of 1,000 to 2,000 tons and only one production line; there are old enterprises with decades of experience in R&D and strong production mold powder technology, and there are also newly put into production enterprises; there are mold powder enterprises focusing on serving high-end steel grades such as stainless steel, and there are also 1-2 mold powder factories of ordinary carbon steel enterprises; there are also foreign-funded or joint venture enterprises.
The coexistence of various types of enterprises is determined by the characteristics of China's metallurgical industry. In the early days, protective slag was introduced into China along with casting molds, and then continuously developed through scientific research. Some foreign protective slags have gradually been replaced by domestic protective slags. However, for high-end steel materials such as 400 series stainless steel, silicon steel, and automotive steel, foreign enterprises' protective slags are still in a leading position, and this protective slag is profitable. Domestic mold powder enterprises in China generally only occupy the mid-to-low-end mold powder market. Affected by the meager profits in the past two years and even losses of metallurgical enterprises, the competition in the mid-to-low-end crystallizer continuous casting protective slag market is fierce, and the profit margin is continuously compressed, and crystallizer continuous casting protective slag enterprises have to adjust their pace.
Currently, there are fewer and fewer choices for mold powder enterprises, so we should start planning for future development. First of all, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth analysis of the market situation: foreign crystallizer continuous casting protective slag products have excellent quality and performance, mainly serving high-end steel grades, but there is a lack of after-sales technical support in China, long delivery cycles, and marketing strategies that contradict China's national conditions, so domestic enterprises have many innate conditions to compete with foreign businessmen, but the quality of crystallizer continuous casting protective slag products is the most important. With the gradual increase in the output of high-end steel in China, the attention to the quality of crystallizer continuous casting protective slag will also increase, which is also the inevitable path for the later development planning of large crystallizer continuous casting protective slag enterprises. Secondly, small mold powder enterprises are usually established because of familiar leadership relationships with one or several steel plants. However, there are many small steel enterprises in China at present, which provides a living space for these small enterprises. Currently, the low-end mold powder market has low barriers to entry, low operating costs, thin profits, and fierce competition. However, China's steel production capacity is seriously oversupplied, and pollution is serious, and the country is taking measures to eliminate backward production capacity. By then, the fate of small steel enterprises will be embarrassing, and small powder mills will be in a situation where they cannot raise funds, and will eventually be eliminated.
Therefore, the wise approach for small mold powder enterprises is to avoid low-end competition and wasteful spending, and instead invest more funds and energy into the research and development of high-end products and the improvement of product quality.
