There are many types of protective slag: protective slag, continuous casting protective slag, billet protective slag, etc. Today, from the perspective of the role of protective slag in the continuous casting process:
1. Barrier function (mainly completed by the liquid slag layer)
Isolates air from contact with molten steel, prevents secondary oxidation of molten steel, prevents contact between the carbon-rich layer and molten steel, avoids billet surface carburization, improves billet surface quality, and reduces steel loss. Note: Carburization of the surface of low-carbon steel and ultra-low carbon steel will produce brittle billets.
2. Heat insulation (mainly completed by solid slag)
Greatly improves the factory's operating environment (heat radiation) and promotes the smooth progress of continuous casting. A sufficiently thick solid slag layer can fully exert the heat preservation performance of the protective slag, preventing cold steel and floating steel from solidifying on the mold steel surface. Increasing the temperature in the meniscus region of the crystallizer can avoid many problems and accidents, such as cracks and pores on the surface of the billet.
3. Absorption and melting of impurities (mainly completed by the liquid slag layer) and assimilation
The low viscosity of continuous casting protective slag and the appropriate control of certain components of continuous casting protective slag are conducive to the absorption of molten slag.
4. Lubrication function
The excellent lubrication function of continuous casting protective slag can greatly reduce the friction between the billet and the copper wall, thereby ensuring the smoothness of the billet and ensuring the continuous improvement of speed control. Improving speed control is related to the process. In addition, it is directly related to excellent mold powder.
5. Control and uniform heat transfer
Uniform heat transfer: If the slag film cannot flow evenly between the copper wall and the billet shell, it will cause uneven heat transfer, and all cracks are caused by uneven heat transfer.
The good effect of continuous casting protective slag is related to other chemical compositions, the physical properties of raw materials, and the combination forms of various raw materials. The continuous casting protective slag has good physicochemical properties, reasonable melting characteristics, a stable and uniform layered structure, and a certain slag layer, and must be strictly matched with the relevant process (steel grade, crystallizer size, casting temperature, and speed control) to exert a greater effect.
