Most round billets are used for rolling seamless steel pipes, and some are used to produce important parts, such as shafts. Since the production of seamless steel pipes involves rotating the billet and pushing it to the top of the mandrel for piercing, the billet is rotated by two inclined rolls, and the inner surface of the piercing becomes the inner wall of the seamless steel pipe. This is a very strict processing method, so the quality of the round billet is very strict.
Compared with square billets, the round billet crystallizer does not have pre-solidified corners. The solidification shrinkage stress generated by the billet cannot be released through the interaction of the four corners like square billets, but there is no fixed release point, which easily causes stress concentration, making the billet prone to sagging and longitudinal cracks. When the longitudinal cracks develop to a certain extent, they will also lead to steel leakage.
Therefore, the main requirements for continuous casting protective slag for round billets are:
Liquid slag layer thickness. A suitable liquid slag layer thickness is a key factor in obtaining good billets and stable steel casting. Excessive thickness or thinness will have an adverse effect on the billet surface.
Slag consumption. Appropriate slag consumption refers to the degree to which the continuous casting protective slag flows into the periphery of the crystallizer and the lubrication provided by the liquid slag. Round billets have a lot of friction during steel casting, so it is very important to ensure sufficient lubrication of the solidified shell.
