  Background and Overview

Lithium metaborate It is a colorless triclinic crystal with a pearly luster. It is soluble in water and begins to decompose above 1200°C, producing lithium oxide. The octahydrate is a colorless trigonal crystal with a melting point of 47°C. It can be prepared by melting stoichiometric lithium hydroxide or lithium carbonate with boric acid.

  Applications

Lithium metaborate It is a flux used in fusion sample preparation, suitable for sample preparation using wavelength dispersive XRF fluorescence spectrometry, AA atomic absorption, and ICP. Its main function is to mix proportionally with lithium tetraborate to neutralize the acidity and alkalinity of different oxides, melt the sample, and obtain the corresponding molten glass片 or solution. Examples of its applications are as follows:

  1. Preparation of ICP-AES and AAS analysis solutions using lithium metaborate

The technical solution adopted is: First, the sample to be tested is melted and decomposed using lithium metaborate in a platinum or platinum-gold crucible; then the molten liquid is directly poured into dilute acid; then heated to completely dissolve the molten liquid of the oxide sample in the dilute acid to obtain the analysis solution. Using the strong melting and decomposition characteristics of lithium metaborate for oxides, and the good demolding effect of lithium metaborate in platinum or platinum-gold crucibles, the melt can be directly poured into a dilute acid solution to quickly generate an analysis solution; effectively solving the problem of dissolving acid-resistant oxide samples, often used for general oxides; the resulting analysis solution is suitable for inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and atomic absorption spectrometry. Compared with the general borax alkaline fusion method, a one-step pouring method can be used, simplifying the operation steps, reducing the probability of sample contamination, and achieving sodium determination.

  2. Preparation of lithium tetrafluoroborate.

Lithium tetrafluoroborate is mainly used in lithium battery electrolytes and pharmaceutical chemicals. Its preparation method includes the following steps: mixing lithium carbonate, monohydrate lithium hydroxide or anhydrous lithium hydroxide, boric acid, and boron oxide, then burning to obtain Lithium metaborate ,crushing to obtain lithium metaborate powder, mixing the lithium metaborate powder with ammonium fluoride or ammonium hydrogen fluoride, and calcining the reaction under vacuum and negative pressure to obtain the lithium tetrafluoroborate product. This process has the advantages of readily available raw materials, non-toxic and non-corrosive raw materials, high product quality, no side reactions, and environmental protection.
