In the actual production process, Continuous casting protection slag performance is closely related to slag addition operation. Production practice has proven that even with the correct protective slag, incorrect use will cause slab quality problems. When adding continuous casting protective slag to the mold, it must be evenly distributed on the steel surface in the mold. When faults such as steel liquid level fluctuation, deviation, and casting stop occur during casting, corresponding measures must be taken. The following introduces precautions for adding continuous casting protective slag:

  1. The operating procedure for adding continuous casting protective slag

  (1) Prepare slag adding tools: The slag adding tools are as follows:

Slag removal rod: The slag removal rod is mainly used to remove large slag rings in the mold. During bonding, it is also used to test the shell to confirm the operation of the shell. A metal oxygen combustion tube or a wooden strip can be used. For the eddy current level monitoring system, a wooden slag catcher must be used. For other level monitoring systems, an oxygen combustion tube can be used, which is both convenient and practical.

Slag ladle: Used to hold slag when changing slag and removing slag in the mold.

Slag pusher: A tool for adding continuous casting protective slag to the mold. For eddy current level monitoring systems, wooden and wooden inference rakes should also be used to avoid interfering with signals. Slag shovel: Used to hold slag when changing slag and removing slag in the crystallizer.

  (2) Precautions

  1) When the mold level fluctuates abnormally, mold powder should be added after the level stabilizes.

  2) Do not push the mold powder directly to the corner of the crystallizer.

  3) When picking up slag blocks or slag rings, pull gently and slowly to avoid the slag curling in the molten steel.

  4) When starting the tundish, protective slag must be added after the water level submerges the inlet of the submerged nozzle.

  5) If abnormal mold powder is found during casting, if the consumption is too low, the mold powder must be replaced.

  6) Slag should be added frequently and thinly to ensure that a layer of new slag is always covered on the slag layer.

  2. Continuous casting protective slag operation at the start of casting

When the continuous casting machine starts, the size of the steel flow in the tundish must be appropriate to ensure that the mold head is not damaged and that the material blocking the mold head does not overturn. In addition, the germination time required by the process should be ensured. During operation, pay attention to:

  (1) In the process of raising the steel level in the crystallizer, it is usually attempted to stop the bar 1-2 times to ensure that the appearance time is between 30-90 seconds.

  (2) When the molten steel in the mold reaches the specified height (generally 70-100 mm from the upper opening), the casting machine starts the billet pulling and vibration device while ensuring the germination time. The starting speed should comply with the process regulations, generally 0.3-0.6 m/min.

  (3) Add protective slag immediately after the submerged nozzle outlet is submerged by the molten steel.

When continuous casting just starts, the molten steel in the crystallizer cools down rapidly, and after adding the continuous casting protective slag, it absorbs a large amount of heat. The steel surface may form a crust. At this time, the slag surface should be gently stirred with a slag remover. After confirming that there is no crust, the continuous casting protective slag can be added in the normal way. Note that protective slag can only be added when the molten steel submerges the side holes of the submerged nozzle.
